What Others Are Saying

I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to offer their comments. I sincerely appreciate your feedback.

Great Book. I really enjoyed this book. I think the author did a very good job at capturing the everyday life of the our ancestors during this time period in this part of Florida. Like many of the stories I have heard before from "Old Timers", the people during this time did what they had to do to survive. I'm ashamed to say I have never known, or thought about, how the veterans of WW1 were received back home after the war. This isn't something that we are taught growing up in school. Moving forward I will continue to learn more about this subject. Thank you Mrs. Johnston for bringing this to light for me, while also entertaining me with stories of running from "the Man".

Beautifully written American historical fiction. I am definitely better off for having read this book. I knew nothing of the Bonus Army, the WPA camps or several other historical topics that are discussed.  I felt like I was sitting on an old Florida front porch, listening to Uncle Will tell his stories.  Rebecca is able to take you back in time to an era that is often overlooked and she helps you understand why we must never forget it.  This book is beautifully written and it will be at the top of my list for recommendations for many years to come.

Travel through time! Love this novel! It really transported me through time and let me experience what brotherhood was to the men who fought WWI and returned as wounded vets; with visible and invisible wounds. Powerful novel, kept me wanting to hear more about their lives and relationships. Highly recommend!!

Captivating read & beautifully nostalgic Old Florida stories. This was an amazing book that I literally couldn’t put down after Chapter 1! These tales of Old Florida history were beautifully nostalgic and helped me better remember my own Florida ancestors and the wounded veterans from my family line. Rebecca Johnston has a true gift for intertwining the characters’ stories, historical events, and the long lasting impacts of it all. My eyes were opened to the importance of proper VA care and the heartbreak and tragedy of the lack thereof. This book was a great read and one I can see myself picking up and reading time and time again.

An insightful and realistic read. Starts out mild with interesting facts and weaved with interesting characters. It then periodically hits you with stark cold reality that finishes with gut wrenching truth bombs. The author knows her stuff!
